WHY CHOOSE A SINGLESPEED BIKE?

Single speed bikes are great for those looking for a simple and easy bike. One to use for daily cycling or just the occasional spin, without the worry of regular maintence or gears always working efficiently. They are great for the city, urban or leisure cycling.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SINGLESPEED BIKE?

It's important to know where you plan to use the bike the majority of the time, e.g city or suburbs, flat or hilly areas. Single speed bikes can be ridden for long durations, gear ratios can be varied higher or lower by changing a rear cog to suit your planned ride.

What's the difference between fixed gear and single speed?

A fixed gear cog on the rear wheel does not allow a freewheel option. The pedals will always rotate forward (or backwards!) so long as the rear wheel is turning. Commonly used on the track, fixed gear bikes don't have braking mechanisms, but on the road, the fixed cog counts as one brake, another is required in the form of a caliper (usually front) to be road legal. Freewheels are cogs more associated with freewheeling regular bikes, ie. allowing the rider to stop pedalling and cruise while the cycle is still in motion. A freewheel single speed is still just one gear which can be varied in size for easier or harder pedalling. Many wheels have a flip flop hub which allows for a fixed cog one side, and a freewheel the other. The wheel can simply be turned around to offer the choice depending on mood!

How do you know the right gear?

Gear ratio is determined by the number of teeth of the chainring on the front chainset and teeth of the sprocket on the rear wheel. The larger the gear on the front and the smaller the rear, more effort is required to turn the pedals, the bike will ultimately go quicker at high cadence. The smaller the front and larger the rear the lower the gear, therefore less effort required!
