OVERVIEW

Some sources attribute the origins of the phrase ‘tooth and nail’ to 16th-century England; others reference Harper Lee’s American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. The sentiment is the same, the very definition of commitment, that somebody is prepared to fight with ‘teeth and fingernails’ to achieve their goal. If that’s how you roll out on the bike (and even if it’s not) these carbon wheels are the perfect tools for the job. The 50mm deep-section rims are made from unidirectional carbon and feature an undulating, ‘wavy’ finish. Simultaneously reducing aerodynamic drag and the impact of crosswinds, it’s a solution borrowed from nature. In 2008, researchers at MIT demonstrated how bumps on the flippers of humpback whales provided the animals with supreme agility at odds with their vast size. The bumps, known as ‘tubercules’, minimise drag by breaking up resistance and versions were subsequently adopted in designs for wind turbines. Compatible with tubeless or clincher tyres (the wheels, not the whales), Tooth and Nail feature Novatech precision ceramic hubs (made by DT Swiss), which reduce friction and provide better sealing against the weather. Designed for a long life, the wheels use Sapim CX-Ray spokes, one of the toughest and most aero spokes in production. The ‘straight-pull’ construction (rather than J-bend) helps build a stiffer wheel and makes the spokes less prone to failure – they’re even x-rayed by the manufacturer prior to dispatch. The wheels have a centre lock disc and weigh in at an airy 1.6kg for the pair. If you'd like these built with Classified's revolutionary Powershift Hub, get in touch here for more information.
